The super substitute saved Holland
The Netherlands scored a 2-1 victory over Poland in the opening match of the first group D of the men’s EC final tournament in Hamburg on Sunday. Finished the winning goal in the 83rd minute Wout Weghorst after entering the field from the substitution just a couple of minutes earlier.
Without their injured superstar Robert Lewandowski played Poland took the lead in the opening half Adam Buksa with a goal in the 16th minute, but Cody Gakpo equalized 13 minutes later after a shot bounced past the goalkeeper through a Polish defender Wojciech Szczesny.
Danish feelings everywhere
Group C opened with a 1-1 draw between Denmark and Slovenia. Christian Eriksen gave Denmark the lead in the opening half of the match in Stuttgart, but a tenacious Slovenia disappointed the Danes by leveling Erik Janzan with a 77th minute hit. Losing the win will put pressure on Denmark in the group where England and Serbia are also playing.
Sunday marked 1,100 days since Christian Eriksen’s last match in the European Championship finals, that infamous game against Finland in June 2021 in Copenhagen. Eriksen’s heart stopped in that match, but he later returned nicely to the playing fields and now scored his first EC final tournament goal.
Bellingham’s goal gave England a narrow victory
20 years old Jude Bellingham played a key role when England, one of the big favorites, defeated Serbia 1–0 in the final game of the day.
Bellingham rose to the goal post with a lightning move and finished with a header Bukayo Sakan centering the ball into the Serbian net.
The goal was the midfielder’s fourth in the national team shirt. With the goal, Bellingham (20y, 353p), who won the Champions League with Real Madrid a few weeks ago, became the youngest player to score a winning goal in a European Championship match.
