is the Minister of Foreign Affairs likely to be elected

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs declared himself a candidate for the 2024 legislative elections, on June 30 and July 7. What result can we expect for Stéphane Séjourné?

This is a first for the Minister of Foreign Affairs: Stéphane Séjourné is indeed a candidate for the 2024 legislative elections in the 9th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine. In any case, this is what the Ensemble presidential coalition announced on June 13. This is a surprise for political observers, since the boss of the presidential Renaissance party has never before been elected in a national election. However, he was a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2024.

On social networks, Stéphane Séjourné made his candidacy official with a campaign montage, in which he asserts that “on June 30 and 7, the future of France will be at stake.” But if he is a candidate, this is not the only role that the Minister of the Quai d’Orsay will occupy, since in his capacity as leader of the presidential party, he will also have to coordinate the organization of the coalition campaign in its entirety.

Does Stéphane Séjourné have any chance of being elected in the 2024 legislative elections?

Stéphane Séjourné has never been elected in a national election and has never stood in a legislative election. It is therefore difficult to estimate the chances of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of obtaining a seat at the Palais Bourbon for these 2024 legislative elections. Note, however, that he is a candidate in the 9th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine, a conquered territory which had already was won by the presidential majority for the 2022 legislative elections, by Renaissance deputy Emmanuel Pellerin.

However, after the European elections on June 9, 2024, nothing is decided yet. If we combine the voices of the different left-wing parties which have gathered under the banner of Popular Front, it was the latter who would have won with 29.21% of the votes, a few votes ahead of the Renaissance party which obtained 24.32% of the votes. Good news for Stéphane Séjourné however, since the European deputies of the presidential majority arrived ahead of Le Rassemblement National, which obtained 11.58% of the votes.
