Unfortunately, daring film experiments do not always have the success they deserve. This is also the case with Ad Astra – To the Stars with Brad Pitt. The melancholic, idiosyncratic science fiction film relies on hypnotic images and emotions instead of brash bombast and action.

Anyone expecting wild spaceship battles and breathless action is wrong here. Instead, we get a melancholic journey through the darknesswhich addresses the biggest questions facing humanity. The fantastic and impressive images are accompanied by an almost psychedelic soundtrack that is unparalleled.

Ad Astra is an overwhelming cinematic experience. [Regisseur] James Gray takes us on a nightmarish journey of discovery to the Moon, Mars and beyond, in which space becomes a canvas of emotions, full of beauty and horror.
Nevertheless, Ad Astra was not the hoped-for success: According to The Numbers, the film took in 135 million US dollars at the box office. But with a production budget of 80 to 100 million dollars, that’s not enough to make the film truly profitable. Especially because that doesn’t include marketing costs.
