Over seven million livestock have died in Mongolia this year, which is more than a tenth of the country’s entire livestock population. It is due to the extreme weather phenomenon “dzud” which almost only affects Mongolia.

The weather phenomenon is a combination of dry summers and extremely cold winters and occurs mainly in Mongolia but can also occur in other parts of Central Asia.

Extremely heavy snowfalls form impermeable layers of snow and ice, which means that the animals cannot graze and starve to death. During other times of the year, there is a drought instead, which means that there is not enough feed for the animals to fatten up for the winter.

Notices of redundancies are pouring in more and more frequently. But unemployment is almost at a standstill, new figures from Arbetsförmedlingen show.

The number notified has risen steadily during the spring and reached a historically high 8,300 employees in May. It is the highest figure since the beginning of 2023, which was then affected by a single event (the health care company Humana’s giant alert, which was later withdrawn).

Otherwise, you have to go back to levels at the outbreak of the pandemic in spring 2020. The figure can also be compared with just under 5,400 last May.

But despite that, so far unemployment has not risen very much, according to the Statistics of the Employment Service. Admittedly, approximately 20,000 more are registered as unemployed with the country’s employment agencies than in May last year. But since the turn of the year, unemployment has been largely stagnant at around 6.5 percent, adjusted for seasonal patterns.

Ahead of the summer, youth unemployment has increased slightly. At the end of May, 37,000 people aged 18–24 were registered as unemployed, which is 3,000 more than at the same time last year.

  • Can’t you be a little more specific when you say that something has happened in, for example, southern Stockholm Stockholm, be more specific about the location, you don’t understand where it is southern Stockholm Stockholm you are talking about, which area. You need to be more clear when you write.

    Maya

Hey Maya! Sometimes we can’t actually print the exact location and it depends on several different things. For example, if a person has been found dead but relatives have not been helped, then we do not want to risk issuing a death notice by writing in too much detail.

  • A question about the nursing strike related to your article about heavily pregnant Victorija. For me, childbirth and maternity care in particular feel like extremely socially important professions. From what I understand, there are at least two things in the right to strike that should prevent such departments from going on strike? Region Skåne declares that women and children can die. Why haven’t they submitted the question to the committee that decides whether it is socially critical then? I can understand postponing planned procedures, but a woman can’t squeeze until the strike is over?!

    Tessa

    Hello,

Region Skåne considers the strike to be socially dangerous industrial action. They have therefore requested that the Vårdförbundet withdraw the strike notice.
