First The Boys Season 4 reviews celebrate Amazon sequel but

Fans of the bloody superhero hit The Boys don’t have to wait much longer, because the fourth season starts this week with the Amazon Prime subscription. Before that, first reviews of the new episodes In addition to a lot of praise, there are also aspects of the fourth season of The Boys that are sour.

First The Boys Season 4 reviews praise new episodes again for insane excesses

Empire doesn’t hold back on a superlative and celebrates the new episodes as the best The Boys season to date:

The latest season of The Boys is the best yet. She finds new waysto deliver both overpowering outrageousness and meaningful character drama. Wherever it goes next, we’re happy to follow.

The Wrap sounds similarly positive. In his review, Bob Strauss praises the fresh approach to the familiar themes of the superhero series in season 4:

Indeed, the fourth season often leaves the impression that it is striving for more heinous violence, rampant deviance and Republican talking points than one can comprehend. What is impressive, however, is that showrunner Eric Kripke’s creative team has managed to give the expected material fresh, haunting twists although they cannot prevent some of the plot lines from feeling familiar. What is crucial, however, is how we are continually surprised by new, deeper emotional dimensions in many of the main characters.
Brian Tallerico agrees with this verdict in his review of The Playlist. The new ideas are said to make The Boys even move away from the trend of only focusing on Homelander’s escapades:The Boys started with an undeniably compelling concept in examining sociopathic superheroes, but seemed to lean on both Homelander’s immense popularity and his willingness to remind people of his very adult sense of humor rather than be consistently creative. It felt like a series running out of ideas by the end of its third year. One of the biggest TV surprises of 2024 is that the opposite is true. The Boys could finally grow up.

The Boys Season 4 is also said to show signs of wear and tear

In his Collider review, Garrett Blaney writes that the new episodes of The Boys show the first signs of wear and tear on the successful concept so far:

We’ve seen it play out roughly the same way for three seasons now: Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) team of devilish misfits, the titular Boys, search for a MacGuffin to kill Homelander, clash with villains and a little bit of themselves, and then fail to complete their mission. As much fun as the ride often is, it’s always the same journey; a formulaic adventurewhich repeatedly flies to the same heights, only to land again in the following season and strive for the same ascent.

Alison Herman also writes critically for Variety that the new season of The Boys does not always manage to maintain the narrative direction between the series itself and the introduced spin-off Gen V:

Characters from Gen V are simply switched over without a brief introduction, an infusion of story baggage that is confusing in itself and makes the aforementioned cracks within seemingly endless, interconnected phases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe more difficult to balance. With its own increasingly complex context, The Boys are no longer so capable of making such jabs.

The first 3 episodes will be released on June 13, 2024 the 4th season of The Boys with a Prime subscription. The remaining 5 episodes will follow weekly.
