Three NHL teams are now chasing Jacob Markström for next season – that’s why the goalkeeper is so highly sought after

Jacob Markström has become a hot wild animal in North America.
Now three NHL teams are reported to be chasing the 34-year-old Swede.
Although he has two years was on the contract with the Calgary Flames.

It was in Brynäs that Jacob Markström seriously broke through. After two fine SHL seasons, the tall goalie took the step over to North America in 2010.

14 NHL seasons

He has remained there ever since. First it was the Florida Panthers, then the Vancouver Canucks and in recent seasons it has been the Calgary Flames. In total, there have been 14 NHL seasons and a total of 485 games in the world’s best hockey league.

Now comes new information about Markström’s future. The NHL guru Elliotte Friedman admits in the podcast “32 Thoughts” that the 34-year-old cage guard was close to being traded to the New Jersey Devils already last spring, the negotiations had also come a long way before the deal was blown off.

Chasing Markström

But the Devils’ interest remains intact until the next NHL season. Now they also have competition from two other NHL teams, as Friedman reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators are also showing interest.
– On paper, a combination with Markström and (Joseph) Woll is a pretty good combination. That allows me to see that a team like Toronto might be interested, says the hockey journalist about the Maple Leafs’ interest.

Markström currently has two years left on his NHL contract with Calgary, which is worth six million dollars per season. That salary makes the Swedish goalkeeper very attractive on the market this summer.
– If you go out on the open market and find a goalkeeper, it will be a bigger number and then you are very happy to be able to take that contract.

In the last NHL season, Jacob Markström accounted for a save percentage of 90.5 and conceded goals ended up at an average of 2.78 per game. Now it will be extremely interesting to see which organization succeeds in persuading Gävlesonen.
