Participation rate in the European elections: mobilization in free fall? The first numbers

Participation rate in the European elections mobilization in free fall

How many French people will vote in the European elections this Sunday June 9? The candidates encouraged mobilization even though the vote was usually ignored by voters.

How many French people will make the effort to participate in the European elections? It is this Sunday, June 9, 2024 that voters are expected in the polling stations to choose who will sit in the European Parliament to represent France. Since polling stations opened at 8 a.m., only 19.81% of voters have slipped a ballot into the ballot box according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. However, it is better than during the last European elections with 19.25% participation at the same time in 2019 and barely more than 15% in 2014. The sign of voter mobilization (a little) higher than announced?

The participation rate in the European elections still has time to rise and will increase until the polling stations close at 6, 7 or 8 p.m. depending on the municipality. A new estimate of the participation rate is expected around 5 p.m.; these figures will already give a better idea of the proportion of abstainers among French voters.

The European election ballot is usually quite unpopular with the French. On average, less than half of voters vote for this election according to participation rates recorded over the past 25 years. But the last elections mobilized 50.12% of voters, or barely more than half. If that doesn’t seem like much, it was already a clear advance compared to the previous election where abstainers were in the majority. For the 2024 European elections, polling institutes were counting on 44 to 47% participation until the last day of campaigning, June 7. Will participation be more or less important?
