In national politics, voters usually place the most trust in the party leaders of the larger parties. Not infrequently, the party leaders of the Moderates and the Social Democrats top the confidence list before a parliamentary election.
But in the EU election it is different. In a survey that TV4 commissioned the analysis company Verian to do, the Left Party’s Jonas Sjöstedt and the Green Party’s Alice Bah Kuhnke rank highest – even though the parties are around ten percent in voter support, i.e. well behind the Moderates and the Social Democrats
– Both Jonas Sjöstedt and Alice Bah Kuhnke both have quite a long career in politics. Sjöstedt has been a party leader and Bah Kuhnke has been a minister and they are well known among the public. For Sjöstedt, it also applies that he has fairly high trust figures even among middle-class voters, so he has a personality that obviously resonates with many, says Per Söderpalm, head of public opinion at Verian.
Significant to be known from before
And being known to voters matters.
– It is difficult to have a high level of confidence without being famous, but you can be famous without having a high level of confidence. Building trust and having a high level of trust still requires a certain level of knowledge.
