In February 2024, the first information about the gameplay of Dune: Awakening was finally released. Now it is finally clear why everything in the game is different from the Dune books and films. And it is really because of a single decision.
What is different in the game than in the movies? At the beginning of 2024, the developer studio Funcom announced that Dune: Awakening takes place in a slightly different reality than the films and books. According to the developers, exactly one decision was made differently. This led to the reality of Dune: Awakening.
At the time, they left it open what exactly that decision was for spoiler reasons. However, the decision should lead to the War of the Assassins, a conflict that took place before the film’s action, becoming the heart of the game.

Warning – Spoiler: The following discusses storylines from the Dune books and films.
Which decision was made differently? In the story trailer shown at the Summer Game Fest, it finally becomes clear which decision is meant: main character Paul Atreides is never born in Dune: Awakening – because his mother decides to follow her instructions and give birth to a girl.
The trailer tells the events from the perspective of Paul, who describes the events as a vision:
What does this mean for the world of Dune? Paul Atreides becomes the Messiah of the Fremen in the course of Dune 2. The people worship him and, under his leadership, free themselves from the rule of the emperor.
Without Paul, this will not happen. The Fremen will be completely wiped out as the Assassins’ War escalates. There will also be no God Emperor Leto in the distant future.
However, according to the trailer, Paul’s father does not die either. He is still alive and in power. He will probably continue to lead his house accordingly. You can read what this has to do with Dune: Awakening here:
