It happened during a “targeted, high-risk” traffic stop by the city’s emergency response and major case action teams in the early afternoon near the corner of Walnut Avenue South and Kathleen Avenue in the city, police said.

A driver and a young passenger, both from Toronto, were arrested after the failed attempt to flee the traffic stop. City police said the driver is on federal parole for firearms possession and drug trafficking.

Along with the handgun and 10 rounds of hollow-point ammunition, 47.4 grams of cocaine and six and a half oxycodone pills, with an estimated total street value of $5,640, and $1,540 in cash were found in the vehicle, police said.

“This arrest again highlights that criminal activity is not constrained by municipal boundaries,” Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis said in a release.

“It also demonstrates the real dangers our officers (and the public) face with illegal firearms in our community,” he said.

Police said a 28-year-old driver faces weapons, drug and driving charges, and a 17-year-old passenger faces drug and firearm charges.

Both were held for bail hearings, police said.

Davis said Sarnia police responds to the elevated risk from illegal firearms with modern equipment, enhanced training and use of specialized teams, such as the emergency response unit.

“This safely executed arrest was the 35th deployment of the (unit) since January of this year,” he said.
