Early June 1944 – Off the coast of Weymouth, these British rangers are training for Operation Neptune. This is the assault phase of Operation Overlord. The Allies wanted to create a bridgehead in Normandy, seize deep-water ports like Cherbourg as quickly as possible (to ensure supplies), then seize western France. After several postponements, June 6 became D-Day (or D-Day) for the start of the landings.
