Sick people in misery at the accommodation Rysseviken in Haninge

A man shows his swollen feet, full of sores. The soles of his feet are black with dirt, he walks barefoot on the sticky floor that smells strongly of urine.

His name is Åke and he has diabetes, he says, but it is difficult to have a conversation about different facts. Åke would rather sing.

Rysseviken has been banned from preparing and serving food on the premises.

– But what are we going to do, they have to eat, says Patrik – the only employee on site, and who has just cooked a lunch for those who cannot arrange anything for themselves.

Neither he nor the residents SVT talks to have managed to get hold of the owner of Rysseviken recently. And from the municipality there is no information about any emergency intervention either. Only that the agreement with the accommodation was terminated after serious misconduct.

Since SVT revealed similar misery several years ago, inspections have been carried out but several municipalities continued to pay for their placement of homeless people in Rysseviken.

Many here are mentally and physically disabled. It is allowed to abuse drugs and alcohol. According to Haninge municipality, it may take time to find new accommodation for those in need.

– The municipality works actively to motivate those who live there to move away, says Sedat Dogru (M), chairman of the social committee in Haninge.

Isabelle Pålsson says she is not an addict. She would like to get away from the violence, the fights, the bed bugs and the dirt.

Alerts an ambulance during SVT’s visit

The shared toilet and shower areas are very dirty. There is both urine and faeces on the floor.

We see a man walking in pee-peeled pants.

– It is not possible to get him to change, says a woman who introduces herself as a volunteer on the spot.

SVT helps staff to call an ambulance when we suddenly discover a passed out man who has great difficulty breathing.

After SVT’s visit, residents state that Åke has been picked up and given a new place to live, and that the man who was taken to hospital by ambulance does not want to return to Rysseviken.

SVT has unsuccessfully searched for the owner of the company that operates Rysseviken.
