Black hole or portal? Players look questioningly into the orbit, but NASA provides information

Helldivers 2 players are wondering if they created a portal rather than a black hole. An audio recording from NASA might help.

What is the hole/portal all about? In Helldivers 2, a super colony of Terminids has emerged on the planet Merida. The bugs overran Merida and threatened the freedom and democracy of the Super-Earth, which is why the order was given to completely destroy the planet.

The Helldivers were then dispatched to plant a substance called “dark fluid” in the planet’s crust. Once a certain level of dark fluid was reached, it destroyed Merida, leaving a dark, purple shimmering “object” in orbit instead of the planet.

The commanders’ reports to the Helldivers state that this dark “object” is a black hole, but some players doubt this.

Players believe: Not a black hole, but a portal

What do the players think? A large proportion of Helldivers are of course convinced that the Super-Earth is telling the truth and that it is a black hole. However, there are also some doubters who suspect that it could be some kind of portal or wormhole through which the Illuminated Ones come.

  • Familiar_One_3297 via Reddit: “That’s not a black hole… that’s an Illuminati portal!”
  • HinDae085 via Reddit: “The way it swirls. I think we just created a wormhole. Not a black hole.”
  • Morning_Poppins_Yo via Reddit: “We simply hurled a planet full of bugs through a wormhole in the direction of space squids who excel at hit-and-run tactics […]. Essentially, we gave the Illuminati a way back into the galaxy and added a bug-infested planet to their centuries-old grudge.”
  • Other players believe that this is not a portal for the Illuminated, but rather a connection to the dwarves from Deep Rock Galactic. There have long been rumors about a collaboration between Helldivers and Deep Rock.

NASA releases audio recording of black hole

What role does NASA play? There is an audio recording from NASA on YouTube that shows what a black hole “sounds like”. Astronomers discovered years ago that the pressure waves emanating from the black hole create so-called ripples in the hot gas of the galaxy cluster. These ripples can in turn be converted into sounds.

The audio recording that can be heard on YouTube is a so-called sonification, in which data has been translated into sounds – in this case astronomical data. In order for the human ear to perceive the sounds, the signals are heard “144 quadrillion or 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency”.

    This NASA itself also writes:

The common misconception that there is no sound in space has its origins in the fact that most of space is essentially a vacuum, providing no medium for sound waves to propagate. A galaxy cluster, on the other hand, has large amounts of gas enveloping hundreds or even thousands of galaxies within it, thus providing a medium for sound waves to propagate.

What does this have to do with Helldivers? Some players on Reddit compared NASA’s audio recording to the sounds heard when flying to the black hole (Merida’s former location) in Helldivers 2.

Since the sound in Helldivers 2 and the audio recording from NASA sound at least similar, this could be an indication that it is actually a black hole. We will find out in the future whether we see a portal through which the Illuminated Ones come.

The Illuminated are a hostile, alien faction from Helldivers 1. Players have been expecting the arrival of the Illuminated for months and that they will be a new, third enemy faction in Helldivers 2.
