This is what a lightsaber duel would really look like

The nature of lightsabers as blades of burning plasma is rarely shown. A film presents how dangerous the iconic duels from Star Wars really would be and how they would have to play out.

What does the fan film show? The makers of Corridor asked an expert in medieval European martial arts to choreograph a real lightsaber fight for them. The result is To The Death, a short but extremely intense film that would make even Yoda’s hair stand on end.

What is To The Death about? A series of shorter duels are shown within the creatively implemented framework of a graduation test fight. However, things get tough: Lightsabers are dangerous and this school of heavy fighting teaches with brutal methods – including severed limbs and (brief) death.

What are realistic lightsaber fights supposed to be? A lightsaber is an incredibly hot blade made of plasma. Assuming that such a sword works, it would penetrate virtually any material on contact and cause severe burns. To The Death takes this seriously, the duelists fight defensively and look for gaps in the opponent’s defense.

Since its release around two years ago, around 10 million people have watched the film on YouTube – and for good reason. Because it is still remarkable today:

Is the fight completely realistic? No, the creators also occasionally include typical mistakes to show how dangerous the fighting methods shown in Star Wars would be in reality. For example, the student whirls around with his sword at one point or turns around on his own axis. Both are considered senseless actions because they cause the character to give up cover and/or lose eye contact.

The latest Star Wars series deals with events some time before Obi-Wan and Qui Gon meet the young Anakin. Here you get an insight into the so-called High Republic from The Acolyte.

What else makes the short film special? Aside from the well-choreographed duels and the fantastic effects, To The Death is particularly impressive due to its staging. It skilfully tells a smart story in just a few minutes that alludes to Star Wars clichés or even quotes individual scenes from the great role model. For example, the sweeping observer is very reminiscent of the boy who appears at the end of Star Wars Episode 8.

The creators of Corridor are obviously very aware of the environment they are working in. Their work shows this with sensitivity, but also with a certain malice towards the generally widely stated weaknesses of the newer Star Wars works.
