Gianni Infantino stepped out in his speech at the FIFA Congress of the news confirming that his organization is encountering many obstacles in carrying out the project of a biennial World Cup: “FIFA must organize its own international competitions. They are a driver of development. The time has come to focus on the future of football and competitions. For all. So let me clarify something about the biennial World Cup. FIFA has not proposed a biennial World Cup.”
And continued. “In the last congress, 88% of the federations voted in favor of studying the feasibility of the project. FIFA began to analyze it and came to see that it is viable. But once this is certified, the next phase begins. The one of consultations and debates. In addition to confederations, we have our sights set on clubs, players, leagues… All feedback is good. In football the sun always rises. So we ask them to help build the future of football.”
In a pacifying and open tone, Infantino spoke of his work at the moment in the search for a calendar that pleases everyone: “FIFA has gone from being toxic to trustworthy. Each federation will receive 8 million in four years that is aimed at solidarity and development projects. FIFA money no longer evaporates. Three quarters of the federations depend on FIFA. This income is generated thanks to the World Cup, mainly.”
In addition, the FIFA president lamented the difficult moment that the world is experiencing: “Now that we see the end of the tunnel of the pandemic, that the World Cup is coming, now suddenly a war comes to us and the fear of a conflict arising worldwide. We live in a divided world. I believe in the power of football, but it can’t solve all problems.”
He is running for re-election
Gianni Infantino also confirmed that he will stand for re-election to be president. It will be at next year’s Congress when the new FIFA leader is decided. Infantino aspires to his third term, after having been previously re-elected for the one he is in right now.
