A brutal highlight among the anime looks like it was made for toddlers

At first glance, Made in Abyss might seem like an anime for a young audience. The characters look like children, have big eyes and a big head. The protagonist even has blonde braids and the characters generally look really cute. But anime fans with sensitive stomachs should avoid the anime or at least know what to expect with Made in Abyss.

Why is the anime’s appearance deceptive? There are some scenes in the anime that are particularly brutal and disgusting. The most famous scene from the anime is Mitty’s transformation into a pathetic amoeba. During the transformation, Mitty suffers agony and even asks to die.

If you’re die-hard, you can watch the scene in the following video:

The anime also has some themes that could be disturbing to sensitive viewers. There are also many other examples of why the anime is more brutal than its appearance suggests:

  • With each layer there is a curse that gets worse the deeper you go. At first it’s just nausea, later the characters are bleeding from every orifice. How bad it will be later is anyone’s guess.
  • In one episode, the protagonist is poisoned by a monster. Her teammate tries to amputate her arm, which is now blue and swollen. During the amputation, which he doesn’t even manage to do cleanly, we have to endure the protagonist’s screams of pain.
  • The protagonist commits a crime. She is then tied up and hung – naked. Some viewers complain that the children are sexualized in the anime (via anilist.co).
  • And these are just examples that appear in the first season alone. So if you want to watch Made in Abyss for its visuals or lore, keep these points in mind. The anime series is definitely not for the faint of heart and contains themes that may be offensive to sensitive viewers.

What is Made in Abyss about? This anime is about the eponymous Abyss. It is a gigantic abyss that is divided into several levels. Each level is cursed, making the descent more difficult with each level.

But protagonist Riko wants to venture into this abyss. She suspects that her mother Lyza is waiting for her on the lowest level of the abyss. So she sets out with her robot friend Reg to explore the secrets of the Abyss and fight her way to her mother.

On MyAnimeList, Made in Abyss is rated 8.65/10. This puts it in 73rd place of the best animes, which is a really good ranking. With this ranking, Made in Abyss lands ahead of celebrated animes such as Death Note (8.62) or Jujutsu Kaisen (8.60).

Where can I watch the anime? If the above points don’t put you off, you can currently stream the anime on Freevee. You can watch the anime there for free if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, but the episodes of the first season are interrupted by advertisements.

Alternatively, you can buy individual episodes on Amazon Prime or Apple TV. If you like the anime, the DVD or Blu-Ray might also be something for you.

But behind it lies a revenge campaign of sexual violence. So be warned about the following animes: 5 anime that will prove to your parents that they no longer have to expect anything from you
