House of the Dragon saw the light of day in 2022 as a prequel to the hit series Game of Thrones. In the meantime, a Hollywood strike occurred and two whole years have passed.
But now it says: Summer is coming! A summer in which we can finally see House of the Dragon again, full of fantasy palace intrigue, claims to the throne and, of course, dragon action.
Fantasy sequel: Season 2 of House of the Dragon will be completely different from anything that came before
Ryan Condal, now the sole showrunner, spoke to Variety about the upcoming episodes and why season 1 felt completely different:
We had to cover 20 years. Rhaenyra had to grow up, have children, and those children had to grow up to start the war.
The plot will continue in season 2 just a few days after the events of the first season finaleAs a reminder: Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), the son of Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), killed Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), the young son of Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) Targaryen, with his dragon. Which makes war in Westeros aka the Dance of Dragons seem inevitable. Condal continues:
I think the pace will feel more like accelerating momentum. Season 1 felt fast because it was jumping through time, whereas Season 2 feels more like a fuse that you light in Episode 1 and it gets shorter and shorter – and at certain points small explosions triggered.

Fans of the parent series Game of Thrones should also look forward to a completely different fantasy vibe Because, as Daemon actor Matt Smith confirmed in the same Variety article, the loss of co-creator Miguel Sapochnik, who had contributed several episodes of the first season as a director, is noticeable:
It’s a shame because he had a huge influence on the tone of the series and knew what to deliver. […] People need to feel like they’re getting some sort of Game of Thrones series. We wish him all the best – but when you lose a director of that caliber, you certainly feel it.
Following in Sapochnik’s footsteps in the director’s chair for Season 2 were Alan Taylor, Clare Kilner, Geeta Patel, Andrij Parekh and Loni Peristere. Kilner and Patel were also on board for Season 1. The fantasy fruits of their labor will now be released on Sunday, June 16, 2024 to HBO – on Monday night, the dragons will be saddled up at the same time on Sky Deutschland and WOW. Eight new episodes are scheduled this time.
