The verdict against Donald Trump is historic, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

– No former president has been convicted of a crime.

The presidential election campaign, where Trump is expected to stand as a candidate for the Republican Party, will of course be affected by the verdict, Blanck believes. The sentence for the 34 charges against Trump is expected to be announced on July 11.

Trump risks several years in prison, but it could also be a suspended sentence.

This type of accounting crime, for which Trump is convicted, is usually of a lesser nature, says Blanck.

– But it has always been about the fact that there is something underlying here, that they tried to hide a more serious crime which is trying to influence the outcome of the election.

The verdict will most likely affect how Donald Trump is able to conduct his campaign to be re-elected.

– – He could go to prison but he will perhaps have to appear before a supervisor or something and that could affect the campaign in such a way that he will be limited, says Blanck.
