SVT/Verian: The Social Democrats are losing support before the EU elections

SVT’s latest voter barometer for the EU elections was published on 6 May. Then the Liberals looked set to leave parliament. The Christian Democrats and the Center Party were also dangerously close to the barrier. In the new survey carried out by Verian on behalf of SVT, support for all three parties increases, although none of the changes are statistically certain.

The measurement shows a statistically certain change, it is about the decline of the Social Democrats. Photo: SVT Graphics

EU elections 2024

  • The political scientist from Umeå on few candidates from the north in the EU elections: “Plays a role”

  • Jonas Sjöstedt (V), the only top candidate in the EU from the north: “Everything happens here”

  • One change that is, however, clearer is that the Social Democrats are losing support. The party goes from 29.7 percent to 25.1 percent. At the last EU election in 2019, S received 23.5 percent of the votes, which means that according to this measurement they are not statistically assured of their election result.

    – The decline of the Social Democrats is due to several factors. The Green Party and the Left Party are doing well and challenging the party with well-known candidates, while S has a challenge in mobilizing its own voters, says Per Södermalm, head of public opinion at Verian.

The smaller parties look set to lose mandates

Sweden has 21 seats in the European Parliament. If this voter barometer were to stand, it would mean that SD, S and V would get one more mandate compared to today, while C, KD and MP would each lose their mandate.

    – The EU election campaign has started in earnest and the willingness to vote is increasing. The fact that things are moving in the electorate is therefore not so surprising. It is a short and intense election campaign where a lot can still happen, says Per Söderpalm.
