Barcelona will celebrate winning the Women’s Champions League in the spring of 2024. Barcelona defeated Lyon in the final match played in Bilbao with a score of 2–0 (0–0).
The winning goal was scored by the world’s best female player last year Fence Bonmati.
Barcelona are celebrating their second title in a row and third overall. Last year, Barcelona defeated Wolfsburg in the final.
With the win, Barcelona became the third team to win the Champions League three times. The Women’s Champions League has been played since the 2001–2002 season.
For Barcelona, the trophy is the fourth of an amazing season. The team has lost only one match during the entire season.
Lyon was aiming for its ninth Champions League win in the final match. The team just defeated Barcelona in the final in 2019 and 2022.
Lyon’s champion coach Sonia Bompastor, 43, coached his last match at the helm of Lyon. It has been reported that Bompastor will become Chelsea’s coach, although the club has not yet confirmed this.
This is how the final match went
The final match started quickly for Barcelona, when by Caroline Graham Hansen concentration found Fridolina Rolfönwho did not succeed in the open position.
Lyon got even closer a moment later, when the sports legend, playing in his eleventh Champions League final Wendie Renard hit the post. Barcelona had difficulties in special situations, especially in keeping Renardi.
Barcelona’s lead goal was close at half an hour, but a topper Vanessa Gilles saved the ball from the goal line. Barcelona’s dangerousness was flashed at the end of the period by Graham-Hansen, whose shot, however, flew wide of the goal.
The superstar was the character of the episode anyway. Graham Hansen created several chances from the right with both crosses and his own runs. However, the break was scoreless.
In the second episode, Barcelona’s biggest star Bonmati appeared. The Spaniard was still in the dark in the opening period, but in the 63rd minute he broke in and shot the ball from a small angle through the leg of Gilles and past the goalkeeper by Christiane Endler.
Lyon looked for an equalizer, but the team fell into sloppy decisions at the most important moments.
The final decision of the match was seen in extra time, when Alexia Putellas still managed to finish with a final score of 2–0.
A new women’s Champions League finals crowd record was set in Bilbao
The match was played at a packed San Mamés stadium in front of 50,827 spectators. It is a new audience record for the women’s Champions League final. The previous record crowd was seen in the 2012 final.
