The use of a special alkaline water for cleaning in hospitals is paused within Region Kalmar County, reports SVT Nyheter Småland.

The reason is the question marks experts have expressed about the water’s cleaning effect. The region’s own quality measurements have shown positive effects, the region’s responsible for local maintenance writes in an email to SVT, but more thorough analyzes must now be carried out.

The water, which is called Z-water, had begun to be used on a trial basis at the hospitals in Oskarshamn and Västervik.

The region has installed its own machine at the hospital in Västervik to produce the Alkaian water. In 2023, the region paid SEK 143,000 to the company that makes the water, but the Swedish Association for Nursing Hygiene (SFVH) believes that the scientific support is too poor to be able to recommend so-called Z-water.
