FIFA RANKING. It is this Thursday, March 31 that the FIFA rankings will be frozen for the draw for the next World Cup.
The draw for the next World Cup is scheduled for Friday April 1 in Qatar from 6 p.m. in France. To determine the different pots for the draw, Fifa has indicated that the latest Fifa rankings, published this Thursday, March 31, will determine the order of the teams, except for the host country Qatar, which is automatically included in pot 1. According to projections, Brazil will be the newest leader of this ranking, dethroning Belgium. France, victorious in their friendly matches, will remain in 3rd place and will therefore be seeded for the World Cup draw. Hat 1 is also fully known according to the projections of the new FIFA rankings with Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

According to the latest ranking published by FIFA for the month of February 2022, France remains in 3rd place, behind Belgium and Brazil. Argentina moved up to 4th place and overtook England, 5th.

A new method, which came into effect in August 2018, is currently used by FIFA. FIFA called this new version “SUM”. Before this reform, the ranking was based on an average, established over a certain period of time. The new system proceeds by addition/subtraction on a total of points, according to the matches gained or lost. FIFA explains that the points added or subtracted are partly defined by the relative strength of the two opponents. The model therefore takes into account the logic that would like a higher ranked team to obtain better results against an opponent who occupies a lower position in the ranking.
