Iran begins five days of mourning this Tuesday, May 21, with a series of ceremonies in different cities across the country. Firstly, there will be ceremonies this Tuesday at Tabriz, a town located not far from the crash site and where the bodies were taken. State television showed thousands of people gathered in the center of the capital of East Azerbaijan province, carrying portraits of the president who died at age 63 and the seven other victims of the crash.
Then, this Wednesday will be the highlight of the ceremonies. The remains of President Raïssihis Minister of Foreign Affairs and other people on board the helicopter will be taken to Qom then Tehran.
The Supreme Leader must deliver the funeral prayer. There will be a significant mobilization of the faithful that day in Tehran with the presence of foreign guests during the funeral who will travel several kilometers.
The remains of Ebrahim Raïssi will then be taken to the northeast of the country. He will be buried in Mashhad at the mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth successor to the Prophet Muhammad according to the majority Shiite Muslims in Iran.
The start of the electoral process
The electoral process for the election of Ebrahim Raïssi’s successor will begin. Applications will be submitted between May 30 and June 3. The list of successful candidates will be published around June 11 and the election will take place on June 28. We will then know the name of the successor of the deceased. It is also a sign of the desire of those in power to show that despite the death of President Raïssi, there is no political crisis or institutional.
