Spain is recalling its ambassador “indefinitely” from Buenos Aires in a very sharp diplomatic mark against Argentina, after Argentine President Javier Milei insulted Spain’s prime minister during his visit to Madrid.
Milei attended a meeting ahead of the EU elections with the far-right party Vox in the Spanish capital Madrid on Sunday. In his speech, Milei characterized Spanish Prime Minister Perdro Sánchez’s wife as “corrupt”.
– It is unacceptable that a sitting president visiting Spain insults Spain and the Spanish Prime Minister – a fact that violates all diplomatic customs and the most elementary rules of coexistence between countries, said Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
– With his way of being, Milei has caused the relations between Spain and Argentina to become the worst in our modern history, said the foreign minister in a televised statement.
Argentina’s controversial president Milei has been in Spain since Friday. In his speech to 11,000 Vox supporters, Milei called on Europe’s ultra-nationalists to “unite against socialism”, while also attacking the prime minister’s family and Spanish government policies.
– Let us not give way to socialism. It seems that we are few, but we have nothing to fear – the battle on the battlefield is not decided by how many soldiers you have, but by the forces from above, said Milei.
French far-right politician Marine Le Pen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from the far-right party Brothers of Italy also participated in the Vox meeting.
