A real success for TF1, the HPI series returns on Thursday May 16, for a fourth season. The main character, Morgane Alvaro, who therefore has high intellectual potential, is pregnant. Does being HPI change things during pregnancy? We asked the question to Dr Odile Bagot, gynecologist.
A real audience hit with more than seven million viewers gathered for each episode, the HPI series retraces the life of Morgane Alvaro, HPI and single mother of three children, recruited by the Judicial Police service of the city of Lille, where she serves as a consultant.
The young woman indeed provides valuable assistance to the investigations carried out by her colleagues because as a person with high intellectual potential (HPI), she is endowed with sensitivity and a sixth sense which points them on the right track.
A pregnant main character, in this new season
At the end of the third season, Morgane discovers that she is pregnant. This fourth season therefore promises an HPI consultant troubled by the occurrence of a new pregnancy, especially since she does not know who the father of this future child is. As a woman with high intellectual potential, is pregnancy different from other women? We asked the question to Dr Odile Bagot, gynecologist and member of the Doctissimo expert committee.
According to her, “no study shows any impact of this particular state – the high potential therefore – on pregnancy”. On the other hand, “all women in consultation should be treated as if they were HPI, this should not be an exception. This means, for example, that all women deserve clear, sincere and honest explanations from their doctor and this is perhaps even more true for HPI women, who analyze things a lot and need to understand.
Well-informed but also hypersensitive women
For the doctor, if being HPI does not change anything in a pregnancy, this giftedness means that these women naturally have more in-depth knowledge than others about this particular moment in their lives.
“They draw conclusions from their readings, from their observations” further details Odile Bagot. “It can therefore be useful to present information to them based on studies, statistics, etc. Data to which they will be sensitive.
However, be careful with the form, warns the expert. “These women also present with hyperacuity and hypersensitivity and can quickly become victims of an excessive emotional storm if we say a word a little quickly, without necessarily thinking about it. For example, exclaiming about the fact that they have a beautiful baby will immediately make them think that the baby is too big, that something is wrong.”.
Generally speaking, the gynecologist reminds us that it is not a pathology but a “state of being” and that we must “listen and adapt to these women” throughout. throughout this particular period.
After pregnancy, how does motherhood unfold for an HPI woman? Jeanne Siaud-Facchin, psychologist who has followed and studied many gifted people interviewed by the Magic Maman website explains: “It is not uncommon to observe that many gifted adults become parents late in life, if at all. Then, they wonder a lot about the merits of this decision: is it reasonable to give birth to children? How can they accept this responsibility? Once the decision is made, they have questions and questions? anxieties which are their own.”.
And will an HPI parent necessarily have a child with the same gift? “A person with HPI is more likely to have a gifted child. However, we have still not detected intelligence genes, but a lot of work has been carried out on twins separated at birth who, despite different developmental environments, would have similarities in their abilities” continues the expert. But the opposite is also possible: a gifted parent can absolutely have a child who is not, just as a gifted child can have two parents who are not.
