100 mile range and cheaper than Tesla

Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio builds premium cars at a premium price, and has become known for its battery swapping stations.

However, there have not yet been any major sales volumes outside the home country.

The new sister brand Onvo, which stands for “on voyage”, will offer a more affordable entry into the world of electric cars and sell in larger volumes.

Will compete with the Tesla Model Y

The first Onvo model is called the L60, and is an SUV coupé in the same size as the bestseller Tesla Model Y.

According to Onvo, the electric car should have a lower consumption than the Tesla, and is offered with battery packs of 60, 90 and 150 kWh.

100 mile range and battery changes

Onvo claims that the new L60 with the largest battery has a range of a whopping 1,000 kilometers, beating the Tesla Model Y by horse lengths. The range for the smaller batteries is 555 and 730 kilometers, respectively.

However, this is according to the Chinese driving cycle, which is more forgiving than the WLTP cycle we use in Europe.

The electric car is based on the same self-developed platform as the Nio cars, which means that it supports Nio’s famous battery exchange stations.

When the battery is empty, the driver can therefore choose between charging the battery or replacing it completely with a fully charged one.

The electric car will be launched in 2024

The Onvo L60 will initially launch in the Chinese market, to be launched globally later in 2024.

The price for the entry-level model in China is equivalent to SEK 45,000 below the Tesla Model Y, which may indicate a price of around SEK 500,000 when the electric car arrives in Sweden.

Both two- and four-wheel drive are on the menu, but beyond that, no information has been revealed about the car’s performance.
