One of the most important composers for gaming music is Marty O’Donnell (69). He was at Bungie for a long time and created the soundtrack for Halo and Destiny. However, his time at Bungie ended in 2014 with him being fired and in bad blood. Now he wants to run for the US Congress as a conservative candidate for the Republicans.
This is what O’Donnell says: In an interview, the now 69-year-old makes some clear statements. This is how he says:
“I’m a gamer, I plan on winning.”
In order to stand for election, O’Donnell must first prevail in the primary election on June 11th against six other Republican candidates.
He also confidently explains: He won’t lose just because someone thinks they can spend more money, because he can’t. Apparently O’Donnell earned well in his many years at Bungie, even if it ended so badly.
Because O’Donnell was part of Bungie’s close leadership circle, but fell out of favor when Activision took over in 2012. O’Donnell felt and his work was no longer valued when suddenly his sounds were no longer used for the big trailers, but other songs.
There was then a lot of anger about “Music of the Sphere”, his big soundtrack. The dispute was only resolved in 2018.
Politics is a walk in the park compared to Halo 2
How does he think his gaming experience can help him? O’Donnell completely lets the gamer hang out. He says: When he sees what’s happening in Congress, it’s a walk in the park compared to what it was like to develop Halo 2.
As you can hear, the work and crunch on Halo 2 almost destroyed Bungie back then. You never wanted to have something like that again in Destiny.
Whatever the case, O’Donnell says he’ll shake up Congress. You don’t need 10 technicians to make a game. But a technician, an artist, an animator, an author, a designer and a composer – everyone has to perceive the world differently.
Where does he stand politically? This is a bit difficult to decipher. He says you have to throw the ring of power into Mount Doom. What he obviously means is that the state should stay out of everything and just let the people do their thing.
For him, the key words are “old family values,” “illegal migration” and “the damn state that interferes everywhere.”
The composer says that two people influenced him at the age of 9: Ronald Reagan and Paul McCartney. The nice thing is that he was able to work with Paul McCartney in Destiny a long time ago: Destiny: Fired composer to Paul McCartney “It’s like the band would break up”
