Stratford man charged in alleged ‘hate-motivated incident’ in Waterloo

A 57-year-old Stratford man faces assault charges after being arrested for what police describe as a “hate-motivated incident” near Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo.

Waterloo Regional police officers responded early Saturday afternoon to reports of an assault in the area of ​​King Street North and University Avenue East.

Police said the Stratford man had arranged for a transportation service to pick him up at his location. After arriving at the pickup spot, the driver for the service and the Stratford man began arguing, police said. The man then allegedly assaulted the driver and damaged the vehicle.

There were no reports of any serious injuries, police said.

The investigating officers later found the suspect “out of the region,” where he was arrested and charged with both assault and mischief with a value less than $5,000.

Because the responding officers said they believe the incident to be hate motivated, the Waterloo Regional police are working with its equity, diversion and inclusion unit on the investigation.

The Stratford man us slated to appear in court next month.
