Swimming is historically one of the flagship events of the Olympic Games. Present since the first modern Games in 1896, swimming events have been competed in swimming pools since the London Games in 1908. From 50 meters to 1500 meters, 35 disciplines will provide as many medals, with good chances for the French team. To this must be added the men’s and women’s 10 kilometer open water events, which should take place in the Seine.
Historically, swimming is largely dominated by the United States, with more than 570 medals, including 257 Olympic titles. France is in 13th place, with 43 medals since 1896, including eight titles. However, for several editions it has been one of the disciplines with the highest number of French medals.
For this 2024 edition, the chances of medals will be high, in the wake of Léon Marchand who will manage to start in the shoes of the big favorite in swimming, after the world championships in Japan last year where he showed in the eyes of the world his talent. With three world titles in three discipline events, and the world record in the 400m medley, he arrives in Paris as the big favorite. Aligned on 200 and 400 meter medley, as well as on 200m breaststroke and butterfly, it will be as much chance of a title for the Toulouse resident. The other hopes will come from Maxime Grousset, triple medalist in 2023 in Japan and Florent Manaudou, who will hope in Paris to win a fourth Olympic medal in 50m freestyle in four different Olympics, his fifth in total. Among the girls, hopes will rest on Charlotte Bonnet and Marie Wattel, as well as Anastasiia Kirpichnikova. The young swimmer trained by Philippe Lucas was naturalized in April 2023.
When are the Olympic swimming events held?
The swimming events will begin on Saturday July 27, with the first medals awarded in the evening, with the finals of the 400 meters and the 4x100m freestyle. The tests last nine days, until Sunday August 4.
Where do the tests take place?
The pool swimming events will take place at La Défense Arena, in Nanterre. The open water swim will be in the Seine, with an arrival at the Alexandre III bridge. Finally, diving, water polo and artistic swimming will be at the Aquatics center in Saint-Denis.
