The handball events at the Olympic Games will take place from July 25 to August 11. Discover the full calendar.
For several editions, handball has been one of the most followed sports of the Olympic Games. It is also one of the most competitive and prestigious competitions in this sport, for both men and women. With twelve qualified teams, the competition will run from July 25, the day before the opening ceremony, until Sunday August 11, the last day of the competition.
Present at the Games since 1972 in its indoor version, handball is a sport dominated by European nations. Among men, France has won the most Olympic titles, in 2008, 2012 and 2021. Among women, the Danes also have three gold medals, but the French won the title at the last Games in Tokyo. The two French selections will therefore be among the favorites for the Olympic title this summer, especially since they won the last international competitions, the Euro last January for men and the World Cup in December 2023 for women.
The teammates of Nikola Karabatic and Dika Mem will begin their tournament against Denmark, for a remake of the last final of the Games. They will also face Norway, Hungary, Egypt and Argentina during the group stages. If the two finalists from the last Olympics finish in the first places in the group, out of the four qualifiers for the quarter-finals, they could no longer meet before the final.
Among the girls, the French escaped the Norwegian group, and will be opposed during the preliminary round to the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, Brazil and Angola. If both teams finish at the top of their respective groups, they will also avoid each other before the final.
