Early on Tuesday morning, demonstrations against Israel’s ongoing warfare in Gaza began outside several universities around the country.
The actions are inspired by the extensive pro-Palestinian protests that have spread at American universities in recent weeks.
In Lund, around 50 people have gathered in Lundagård to set up tents and put up banners, according to SVT Skåne.
Tents have also been set up at the university in Uppsala, TT reports.
– We want to point out that it is a peaceful demonstration that is part of a global solidarity movement, we are taking what happened at universities around the world to Uppsala, says a spokesperson to TT.
Greta Thunberg in place
At Stockholm University, nearly 20 pro-Palestinian demonstrators set up camp on Tuesday morning, which Today’s news was the first to report. One of the protesters is the climate activist Greta Thunberg.
A similar protest is also being held at the Royal University of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, where at least 40 people have set up a tent camp on the university campus, according to DN.
Several student protests
Similar actions are also taking place elsewhere in the country.
In Gothenburg, students have set up tents outside the university’s main building at Vasaplatsen, reports report Gothenburg Post. The students are reported to demand, among other things, that the university’s management “officially and publicly condemn Israel’s attack on Gaza as fundamentally wrong”. The protests have so far been peaceful, according to the police.
At Örebro University, pro-Palestinian students set up camp on Monday, according to SVT Örebro. About 30 people also gathered outside the university on Monday evening and shouted slogans while a lecture was being held inside the university.
