Ecofin: from VAT in the digital age to an aging population, the issues on the table

(Finance) – Management of tax withholding surpluses and adaptation of VAT to the digital age, but also the challengesand resulting from the aging of the population: a substantial agenda ahead for the economic and finance ministers of the European Union of Ecofinscheduled today, Tuesday 14 May.

As the official note explains, a political agreement will be sought on the proposal “aimed at making the exemption of excess withholding taxes (FASTER) quicker and safer”. This initiative aims to contribute to the fight against tax abuse and completing the EU capital markets union by encouraging cross-border investment”.

The value added tax (VAT) package is also at the center of the discussions in the digital age. Package which – it is explained – includes three proposals, aimed respectively at combating VAT fraud, supporting businesses and promoting digitalisation. Ministers will exchange views on the state of implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

The Council will then aim to aprovide implementing decisions to approve amended national recovery and resilience plans submitted by some Member States.

There will be no lack of discussion on the current situation in relation to the economic and financial consequences of the attackussa towards Ukraine. They will be informed of the progress of the implementation of the Facility for Ukraine.

Among “any other business”, the Presidency and the Finance Minister of the Netherlands will present the work program of the coalition of Finance Ministers for action on climate for the period 2024-2025 e will inform ministers of the results of the IMF annual meeting.
