Pressbyran and 7 Eleven want to stop selling cigarettes

The phasing out means that Reitan Convenience, which is the franchisor of Pressbyrån, 7-Eleven and the latest kiosk venture PBX, will stop taking in any more cigarette products or brands from 2026.

The goal is to completely stop the sale of cigarettes, according to Reitan’s Sweden CEO Anna Wallenberg.

— The risks of tobacco smoking are well known, both when it comes to health risks but also environmental impact and working conditions in production. We also see that there are some countries that introduce various forms of smoking bans, for example progressive age bans, she says.

Great Britain and New Zealand, among others, have wanted to introduce laws that prohibit young people from buying tobacco products.

May cause reactions

54 percent of the chains’ tobacco sales today come from cigarettes, the rest comes from snus, nicotine and other smoke-free alternatives.

According to Anna Wallenberg, the sale of cigarettes has decreased steadily in recent years. But she still believes that the announcement can lead to reactions among customers.

“Of course it can be, but in the long run it will probably be perceived as something positive,” she says.

— In the future, consumption will decrease and we would like to work to ensure that the products disappear from the market.

Products with palm oil must be removed

In addition to the phasing out of cigarettes, products containing palm oil will also disappear from kiosks from 2027. Palm oil is found in a variety of products found on store shelves, including chocolate, chips and cookies. Marabou and Cloetta still use palm oil in some of their products.

If some suppliers do not replace the palm oil in their products, it could mean that they disappear from the Pressbyrån’s and 7-Eleven’s range, according to Anna Wallenberg.

— It is too early to say which products it may be about. We have a close dialogue with our suppliers on how to phase out palm oil.
