When League of Legends and DOTA 2 were fresh on the market, other publishers also wanted a piece of the MOBA pie. Warner Brothers even wanted to score points with well-known superheroes. But that didn’t help either and today hardly anyone knows Infinite Crisis anymore.
What was Infinite Crisis?
In the 2010s, MOBA was considered the new hit. Many publishers tried to gain a foothold, but as we now know, only very few survived. Infinite Crisis also suffered a difficult fate, as the game died after just a few months.
Apart from heroes, hardly anything new
The big feature in Infinite Crisis was of course the champion roster, consisting of well-known DC heroes and villains. In addition to Batman, Aquaman, Superman and Co., there were also lesser-known characters like Atrocitus, Solomon Grundy and Katana. As is typical for MOBAs, there were of course also roles such as Bruiser, Marksman, Support or Tank. There were four maps that, in addition to the classic 5 against 5 with 3 lanes, also copied another game mode from LoL, namely Dominion. A game mode that was also abolished in LoL in 2016. The most interesting map was Coast City, the one with 2 lanes that differed in speed and objectives.
To stand out from the typical MOBAs, there were also destructible environments and objects in the map that you could pick up and throw with Summoner Spells. Apart from that, there were fewer mechanics that differed from the big representatives of the genre.
A quick death
A closed beta began on May 8, 2013. There was then an open beta on March 14, 2014. The game was officially released on March 26, 2015. Shortly afterwards, on August 14, 2015, the game was taken offline again. Despite the big names, the title didn’t survive for more than 5 months.
Massivelyop.com summarizes the Steam player numbers at the time. When it was released, the game only had 4,700 players, which of course continued to decline over the following weeks. In May, the game only managed an average of 1,600 players, according to SteamDB. Even the announced death of the game brought more players in the following months.
But why did the game flop so much?
Despite the developer’s efforts in the form of new heroes and ranked mode, the game simply never managed to gain widespread popularity. Other MOBA competitors also died, but hardly any so incredibly quickly. Heroes of Newerth lasted at least 3 years: A game was supposed to be the big rival to League of Legends: But it died after only 3 years
Ultimately, Infinite Crisis was also the end of Turbine, as it was before. The studio that previously made games like The Lord of The Rings Online or Dungeons and Dragons Online. In 2018 the studio was renamed WB Games Boston and after Infinite Crisis only developed two mobile games. Batman: Arkham Underground (2016) and Game of Thrones Conquest (2017).
