Universal
Van Helsing
Old Romania has far more supernatural monsters in store. So Van Helsing and Co. soon have to deal with versions of Frankenstein’s monster, Mr. Hyde, werewolves and other unpleasant characters. Instead of atmosphere like in the classic films from Universal Pictures from the 1940s, what counts here is crazy action and thunderstorm effects.
Even more for vampire and monster fans:
The dubious legacy of Van Helsing
The film was already popular back then because of it moderate CGI effects ridiculed and, if we are completely honest, has aged poorly. However, it serves as an interesting contemporary document of the cinema landscape of 20 years ago, when animated images from the computer were still relatively new and some filmmakers wanted to explore the new possibilities despite the limitations of the time.
Despite poor reviews, Van Helsing was a huge box office success. It’s also Hugh Jackman’s first action role after the first two X-Men films. Co-star Kate Beckinsale, on the other hand, had already dealt with vampires and werewolves through Underworld.
