A video clip showing the stabbing of an Assyrian bishop in Sydney, Australia in April has been widely circulated on social media.
Now the country’s e-security committee demands that the post be removed from X – worldwide.
Australia’s e-safety committee has issued several orders to remove video and audio clips of the stabbing incident in an Assyrian church from social media.
The messaging service X has blocked the current clips in Australia. But X has not taken all reasonable steps to remove 65 video and audio clips, the Australian committee’s lawyers argue in the country’s federal court, because they can still be accessed using a VPN (virtual private network).
A lawyer for X argues before the court that the commission’s takedown order only applies to Australian sites, but that further consideration is required on the matter.
According to X owner Elon Musk, a global ban is not part of the Australian e-Security Commission’s powers.
A 15-year-old boy is suspected of stabbing the bishop in the Sydney suburb of Wakeley.
