What is happening in Guinea ? For several weeks, fires have gradually ravaged infrastructure on both sides of the capital. Ministries, markets, state institutions… Fires, fortunately without fatalities, have occurred every week since last month and always on sites considered strategic for the country. Last Monday, the very office of the Minister of Culture was on fire. So much so that the presidency speaks “ sabotage actions ” For ” undermine the efforts undertaken » by the CNRD junta.

Before the Ministry of Culture, the fires occurred in particular in an equipment depot of EDG, the public energy company, at the Madina market, the economic heart of the country, or even in a parking lot for tanks.

Ongoing investigations

For civil protection, which was battling five fires in a single day at the start of the week, almost half (40 to 50%) of the losses are due to the obsolescence of the electrical installations. But in the state television newspaper RTG, the presidency’s communication favors the conspiracy: “ sabotage actions are orchestrated in series » taking « to target sensitive places having a direct impact on the daily lives of populations hoping to create […] chaos. Wasted effort. » The public prosecutor assures that investigations are underway to determine the origin of the flames.

Abdoul Sacko, national coordinator of the Social Forces, made up of unions and civil society actors, has another vision of things: “ The first hypothesis says that the CNRD is in a form of admission of powerlessness to manage the country. This same opinion says that it is not a strategy which consists of diverting the attention of the populations on the essential which consists of a return to constitutional order. There is reason to worry. But unfortunately, no valid action is helping to elucidate these fires. It’s total omerta », he regrets.

Contacted several times by RFI, the Minister of Justice did not respond to our requests.

Finally, regarding the explosion of the hydrocarbon depot in the center of Conakry last December, the public prosecutor told RFI that the investigation to explain the causes of the tragedy is continuing.
