The rise of some taxessuch as electricity and fuel, and the shortages in some supermarkets due to the transport strike has caused some basic and routine products in our day to day have suffered a drastic increase in their prices.
What’s more, the increase in the amount of our basket is much more expensive than it was four months agowhen in the last quarter of the year the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) pointed out that the prices of certain basic products were going to suffer an increase of up to 21.2% and that they were going to be maintained for a while. “Unfortunately, the declarations of distributors who warn that they are going to have to transfer the increases in energy to the shelves of supermarkets, and the maintenance of very high energy prices, predict that the rise in food prices will continue over time“, the organization pointed out in a note.
What are the basic products that have risen the most in price?
In this first quarter of the year, the basic products that have risen the most in price are dairy products, meat, eggs, pasta and margarine, with increases of between 8 and 21% in just six months. What’s more, from the OCU itself they consider that this “spectacular price increase”is corresponding to the increase in electricity and fuel taxesas well as the outbreak of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine. In addition, a study by ‘Gelt’ indicates that there has been a general rise in the prices of sunflower oil, up to 32%, as in the flour at 11%, toilet paper at 10% and rice and eggs at 9%.
In the same way, It should be noted that the products that have increased in price coincide with those that require a production and processing phase at a very high cost.. However, the products that have lowered their price substantially are the carrots, with up to 10%, followed by carrots and apples, with 3.1% each.
Significant price consolidation risk
The OCU reiterates that these drastic price increases can cause a generalization to other products, causing a solidity in its value on the rise for a long time. The organization only points out that in order to deal with this rise in prices it is necessary use supermarket comparators to acquire the products at the best price.
