User wants to have his gaming PC repaired – Is horrified when he has to pay for a nonsensical cooler replacement

A gamer brings his gaming PC to the service for a repair. He receives a message that the CPU cooler is too dusty to remove. Therefore the PC cannot be checked further. When he is offered a paid exchange, he feels cheated.

Problems with your own gaming PC can become an annoying matter. Depending on their knowledge of PCs, players can help themselves and solve minor problems on their own, for example if an error was caused by avoidable beginner mistakes.

In more difficult cases, going to a PC repair shop will help in the last resort. Trained specialists there try to get the gaming PC running again. In the case of one player on Reddit, this only worked to a limited extent because he was supposed to pay for the nonsensical replacement of his CPU cooler.

Player should pay for pointless PC repair

What kind of repair was that? On Reddit, user “_windbourne_” reports on repairing his gaming PC. When the computer stopped outputting a picture, the player tried to repair it himself, as sometimes the problem can only be due to a small thing inside the PC.

I tried a lot of things – checking every connection between components, replugging the memory modules and trying them out individually, trying to boot without a graphics card, clearing CMOS and replacing the CMOS battery – I also tested the power supply for signs of life with a paper clip.

_windbourne_ reports on Reddit about his PC repair

He says his attempts at repairs have been unsuccessful and that he has little knowledge of computers. The problem was therefore not as easy to solve as can be the case with an incorrectly connected graphics card. The player decided to take the PC to a local PC repair shop.

A service technician contacted him with an interim status to check his computer. The message stated that the tests so far had not found any problems with the RAM, power supply, graphics card and the drive and installed operating system.

What was the problem? Next, the technician wanted to check the motherboard and processor. However, this would not be possible because the CPU cooler is too dusty to remove and for this reason you would not be able to access the components underneath.

To solve this “problem”, the player was offered to replace his CPU cooler. According to him, the workshop charged the equivalent of a service fee of 75 euros for this work and the additional costs for a new radiator.

The service technician wants to replace the CPU cooler

What happened then? The player believed they were trying to cheat him and sell him a nonsensical repair that had nothing to do with the actual problem. The service technician’s statement was misleading and, according to him, basically made no sense at all.

Reddit user CodAfraid5367 felt the same way and said:

  • “Too dusty to remove. So let me remove it to replace it. What?”
  • inertSpark, on the other hand, wanted to know how the technician planned to remove the cooler that cannot be removed:

  • “Ask him what magical powers he wants to use to replace the radiator when he says it’s too dusty to release from the bracket.”
  • Consequently, _windbourne_ wrote back to the technician and asked him “Why do you want to charge me to replace my CPU cooler when you apparently can’t even remove it?”

In the workshop’s subsequent response from a service manager, it was said that due to the amount of dust there was some concern that other PC components could become contaminated.

However, it is understood that the first message caused confusion and that they wanted to accommodate the player. A new cooler would now be used for further tests, which would remain in the gaming PC as a free upgrade after the test was completed.

Unfortunately, this case shows that not every PC repair goes smoothly. It remains to be hoped that the player will ultimately get their gaming PC back fully functional and that the costs will remain within reasonable limits.
