Pediatric Allergy Immunology Specialist and Asthma Association Member Prof. Dr. Hikmet Tekin Nacaroğlu made important statements within the scope of May 7 World Asthma Day. Stating that this year’s theme is ‘Asthma Strengthens Education’, Prof. Dr. Nacaroğlu said, “World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Asthma Initiative (GINA), a joint organization of the World Health Organization. It is celebrated every year around the world to raise awareness of asthma, provide information about its prevention and treatment, improve the quality of life of asthma patients and reduce deaths caused by asthma. “With the theme ‘Asthma Strengthens Education’ in 2024, it is emphasized that individuals should manage their diseases effectively and accurately identify their medical assistance needs,” he said.

RESPIRATORY THERAPY MAY REDUCE SYMPTOMS

Prof. Dr. Nacaroğlu pointed out that asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people around the world and gave the following information:

“It has been shown that environmental factors are the reason for the increased frequency of asthma in both children and adults in individuals with genetic predisposition. It is known that environmental factors such as climate changes resulting from global warming, air pollution, increased consumption of processed and packaged foods, more frequent exposure to allergens, and widespread use of various chemicals such as detergents increase the incidence and severity of all allergic reactions, including asthma. The main feature of asthma is the hypersensitivity of the airways. Asthma symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing and cough. Understanding and properly managing these factors is the basis of asthma control. Asthma can be controlled with proper diagnosis and treatment, and treatment may vary depending on the severity and frequency of symptoms. Treatment options include inhaled medications. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as respiratory therapy and avoiding allergens may also help reduce symptoms. Because asthma can affect anyone, it is important to see a doctor immediately when symptoms occur. “Early diagnosis and correct treatment will help control asthma symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life.”

“ASTHMA STRENGTHENES EDUCATION”

Prof. Dr. Hikmet Tekin Nacaroğlu continued his evaluations as follows:

“World Asthma Day provides an opportunity to provide information to all segments of society about the management and control of asthma. With the theme “Asthma Strengthens Education”, it is aimed for every individual to have accurate information about asthma and thus reduce asthma-related complaints. Having accurate information about asthma will significantly improve the overall health of not only individuals but also society. Therefore, it is vital that everyone receives proper education and appropriate care about asthma. Additionally, asthma education will help asthma patients choose the right treatment options by identifying their symptoms and triggers. In addition, asthma patients will be kept under control and the progression of the disease will be prevented by creating an appropriate treatment plan together with their doctors. Additionally, asthma education should be supported by asthma patients’ families, friends, and the wider community. Having accurate information about asthma and providing support to asthma patients will help patients fight the disease. It is also important for individuals from all segments of society to obtain accurate information about asthma, to keep asthma under control and to improve the quality of life of asthma patients. “Asthma education will help asthma patients live a healthier life, while also contributing significantly to the general health of the society.” (DHA)
