Car colors you should absolutely avoid they will cost you

If you plan to resell your car one day, check its body color carefully. Because certain colors do not have the same resale value.

When looking for a car to buy, most people first look at its mileage, the year it was put into circulation, then the condition of the vehicle, and secondly, its design and the color of the body. For some, the color is even an undeniable criterion, while for others, it remains secondary if the vehicle meets the other boxes. And yet, the color of a car matters much more than we think. This can completely change the price of a used vehicle on resale. Indeed, according to automotive sector experts, certain colors preserve the value of the vehicle while others conversely destroy its value. Concretely, the color of your vehicle can cause you to lose thousands of euros if one day you decide to sell it.

But then, which colors scare off buyers or make them negotiate prices hard? The automobile specialist, Frédéric Dubois, from BCA Expertise, explains to us that, on the French market, these are “flashy colors and pastels”, like yellow, pink, orange, bright red or even apple green. For what ? Because these colors simply don’t appeal to everyone. Just look at the cars we pass on the street every day; it’s rare to see a bright pink vehicle driving. A study, carried out by the company carVertical in 2022, goes even further by indicating that the French generally opt for a “practical” color for their vehicle, which is “easier to maintain”. Brighter colors may deteriorate over time.

In the details of the study, professionals noticed that the share of bright colors is almost non-existent on the French used vehicle market: “Blue represents only 0.6% of all vehicles checked on carVertical, yellow 1.1%, and red 6.2%”, we can read in the press release. Conversely, the car colors that sell best are, according to Frédéric Dubois, “white, metallic gray, dark gray and black”. You now know which color to choose if you want to make your vehicle a long-term investment.
