A recent update from Square Enix brings changes to payment processing for Final Fantasy XIV, locking tens of thousands of players out of the game.
What kind of update is this? There was recently an update at Square Enix regarding payment processing. What’s new here is that the address in the Square Enix account and the address in the payment information must be identical in order for a payment to be processed successfully.
There are now reports from the community on Reddit that entire regions of players are being excluded from the game. The problem: Many players live in countries that cannot even be stored in their Square Enix accounts.
We can’t register our country!
As the creator of the post reports on Reddit, this affects the Southeast Asia region. Players residing in countries in this region will not be able to provide their location to Square Enix as these countries are not available for selection in the account settings. He writes about this in his post on Reddit:
This is a problem for the players in Southeast Asia who are not officially supported as they cannot even specify their country or region when creating a Square Enix account. [..] now I and many other players are barred from ever paying for our subscriptions or making any kind of online purchases.
The player reports that he has also contacted Square Enix support regarding this issue. Unfortunately, the response from support is not satisfactory and does not solve the problem. He writes about it:
Customer support said it’s better to create a new account. This is stupid not only because it means we will lose years of progress on our characters, but also because even if we create a new account, it will still be useless because we won’t be able to enter our country or region!
What does the community say about this? Other players report in the comments who cannot understand Square Enix’s actions. It is also mentioned here that it is not possible to adjust the address in the account, for example after moving. Some of the comments are:
Only recently in Final Fantasy XIV there was criticism of the game’s benchmark software. With this software you can check whether your hardware is powerful enough to enjoy the upcoming expansion of the game.
The criticism was taken so seriously by Square that the boss announced a comprehensive update for the benchmark software.
