The Pediatrics and Child Health Conference will be held on May 24. However, in preview, health professionals revealed the major proposals made to the government.
Because childhood medicine is going badly, according to professionals, on April 23, the head of the pediatrics department at Nantes University Hospital Christèle Gras-Le Guen and the former Secretary of State responsible for child protection childhood Adrien Taquet, responsible for the “orientation committee of the Pediatrics and Early Childhood Conference”, submitted a plan to the government. This aims to “fundamentally overhaul the child health system” evokes Adrien Taquet in The Parisian. But what does he say? Here are the recommendations that will be discussed.
Create a “shock of attractiveness” in childhood professions
According to Doctor’s Dailywith 8,500 pediatric doctors, France ranks 22e place among the 31 OECD countries in terms of pediatric medical density. To make up for this delay, the report proposes to “invest massively and urgently” in all child care”in the city as well as in the hospital.
Concretely, this would amount to revaluing child psychiatry, particularly by “doubling the price of child and adolescent psychiatry consultations in the city, in order to increase access to care for minors and the attractiveness of the discipline.” But also to strengthen the resources and staff of SMIs.
Impose a mandatory minimum training period of six months on child health
The committee calls for “strengthen and standardize theoretical and practical training in child health in general medicine. This would involve a mandatory minimum internship of six months in child health for all interns to be carried out in different places of practice: general practitioner with specific orientation to child health, outpatient pediatricians, PMI service, health school, hospital pediatric department, pediatric emergencies.
This training in child health must also extend to all professionals, including those responsible for emergency telephone regulation.
Finally, the plan also recommends “strengthen care teams in services that care for children with increased care needs” as well as “protect the number of intensive care and neonatal beds“.
Create new status of public service doctor at school
This new status would open up to school doctors the possibility of a mixed and shared exercise, common to school health, PMIs, public health centers and the hospital. This public service doctor must have the possibility of prescribing, assumes the committee.
Towards a mental health assessment upon entry to college
1.6 million children and adolescents in France have at least one psychological disorder. And mental health figures paint a darker picture of adolescence. Entrance to college should then be accompanied by a “mental health assessment” carried out by the trained school psychologist, by a liberal via local agreement and/or by the psychologists participating in the operation Monpsy.
Press vaccination
Finally, health professionals are asking for greater emphasis on vaccines for children, such as those against the flu or even preventive treatment against serious forms of bronchiolitis with Beyfortus.
