A prominent Palestinian doctor detained for more than four months has died in an Israeli prison, according to two organizations for Palestinian prisoners. They blame Israel for his death.

Adnan al-Bursh, head of orthopedics at Shifa Hospital in Gaza, was arrested in December by Israeli forces while temporarily working at Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, according to the organizations.

His death is called an “execution” by the organizations, and according to their information, his body remains in Israeli custody, reports Reuters.

In April, the Israeli Prison Service announced in a statement that a prisoner arrested for national security had died in a prison, without elaborating on the cause of death. A Prison Service spokesperson said the incident was being investigated and confirmed the statement was about al-Bursh.

Among other things, the World Health Organization has repeatedly called for the attacks on healthcare workers in Gaza to be stopped.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health says al-Bursh’s death brings to 496 the number of health workers killed by Israel since the outbreak of war.
