To avoid using toilet paper, some people look for alternatives and sometimes opt for disposable wipes. If it is not completely prohibited to use them, their use is rather discouraged. Here’s why.
As an alternative to toilet paper, you can find wet wipes on supermarket shelves. Are they recommended for wiping in the toilet? It seems not, according to several specialists interviewed by Buzzfeed.
Wet wipes cause irritation
Sold as an ideal alternative to toilet paper, wet wipes are actually more harmful than helpful. “Using wet wipes is a common cause of perianal dermatitis. which is a rash around the anus area, according to Dr. Alex Elias, an American gastrointestinal surgeon.
“Irritation caused by wet wipes can be secondary to certain ingredients and preservatives, disruption of good bacteria and even residual moisture left behind.” she adds.
Information confirmed by her colleague, Dr Mayssa El Zoghbi, also a gastroenterologist, who adds that “Materials used in some wet wipes may be abrasive or rough and exacerbate irritation, especially in people with sensitive skin or conditions such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures“.
Be careful of the presence of alcohol or perfume
In addition to humidity, the composition of the wipes must also be taken into account, regarding the risk of irritation. “Wet wipes usually contain alcohol or perfumes which can irritate the perianal area” adds Dr. Ari Lamet, also a gastroenterologist.
Other problematic elements, such as parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol can also be included in their composition. Experts therefore recommend, if you wish to use this type of product, to choose an alcohol-free and perfume-free wipe, in order to limit the risks.
What is the best method for wiping in the toilet?
According to the doctors interviewed, the best way to clean yourself after using the toilet is to use a bidet and toilet paper. So wash with water and dry yourself, concretely. “From a medical perspective, incorporating a bidet into one’s hygiene routine can help maintain optimal perineal health and reduce the risk of various dermatological and infectious complications associated with inadequate cleaning practices.” assures Dr El Zoghbi.
A trend which is gradually gaining ground in France, with certain brands offering Japanese toilets – with a jet of water for washing – to be installed directly on your toilet. Toilet paper should preferably be unscented, to wipe from front to back, without rubbing the perianal area.
