Malmö FF wins the final against Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Cup

Malmö FF wins the Swedish Cup 2024 after penalty drama.

But the showdown between Malmö FF and Djurgårdens IF began passively and at halftime the match was still goalless.

The match was suspended

And the second half barely had time to get started before the players were forced to leave the pitch after ten minutes of play. That after a safety net on the short side of the Djurgårds heel broke.

The match was stopped and a match meeting was held before the net was repaired and the match could be restarted. And the lead goal came in the 71st minute of the match when Malmö FF’s Taha Ali broke the deadlock.

Decided on penalties

However, the happiness for the Skåne team would be short-lived. Eight minutes later, Deniz Hümmet sent in the equalizing goal and when regular time was over, the score was still 1-1.

Neither extra time could separate the teams, but a penalty shoot-out would be required to crown this year’s cup champion. Malmö FF started the penalty shootout and connected immediately. When Djurgården missed in both the second and third round, Lasse Berg Johnsen was able to secure the title by winning 4-1 in the penalty shootout.

– We didn’t play a great match, but we stand here now as winners. It is the most important. I’m very happy inside, said Malmö FF’s sporting director Daniel Andersson to Fotbollskanalen after the match.

The penalties:

1-0, Anders Christiansen, goal.
1-1, Marcus Danielson, goal.
2-1, Isaac Kiese Thelin, goal.
2-1, Haris Radetinac, miss.
3-1, Martin Olsson, goal.
