An asylum seeker rejected by the United Kingdom was deported on Tuesday April 30 to Rwanda. The British government welcomes this. However, this is not the start of its migration partnership with Kigali which should put an end to illegal immigration.

The migrant, originally from the African continent and whose request for asylum was rejected United Kingdom, received 3,500 euros to move to Rwanda where he will have the right to live and work. Voluntary relocation, made possible by a program announced in March by the British government: asylum seekers who have exhausted all their appeals, as well as certain foreign criminals, can apply to settle in a third country, without being returned to their country of origin.
This is not a question of the “Rwanda partnership” promised two years ago by London, which should target migrants who arrived illegally on British soil. They will not have the possibility of requesting asylum and will be forcibly deported to Kigali, without receiving the €3,500.
However, for the executive, this resettlement clearly shows that Rwanda is a safe country, capable of receiving groups of migrants, an argument contested by British justice. It also provides a strong symbol for voters, on the eve of local elections across the country where the conservative party in power is expected to lose.
