At least five people have lost their lives and 18 are missing since heavy downpours fell in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The storm has affected 77 municipalities in the state, where hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes and seek shelter in shelters.
More rain is expected in the next 24 hours and in a statement the state government warns of increased water levels in all monitored rivers.
Brazilian President Lula da Silva writes on social media that he spoke with the governor of the state and promised support.
