Now the icon Michael Johnson has had enough and directs great criticism.
It was a complete dream start to the new season for Armand Duplantis. New world record with 6.24 meters straight in the first outdoor competition in Xiamen, China.
Mondo’s success
The Swedish world star thus further consolidates his unthreatened position as the world’s best pole vaulter. In recent years, he has collected victories, gold medals and world records on the treadmill and has been unchallenged on his throne in pole vaulting.

“Mondo” is well on its way to deleting the icon Sergey Bubka from the history books if it continues like this. Now another track and field icon who has had enough of Duplanti’s dominance is reacting.
Critique of the icon
The former running star Michael Johnson now goes to harsh criticism, see below.
“This is a problem for pole vaulting. World records are recognized because they are special. The guy who beats them doesn’t make it feel special. Tough competition creates more interest but he has no opposition. The problem is not that it is his fault, but it is a problem,” he writes on X.

Johnson is clear that Duplanti’s great superiority is a threat to the continued development of the sport and the interest in pole vaulting. But the icon’s critical outing on social media has received a lot of backlash as well, see below.
