Shutter Island is the fourth of six films on which Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese worked together. The stripes of the successful duo were nominated for a total of 31 Oscars, nine of which were won. But the exciting psychological thriller was not considered in any category by the Academy. Still, Shutter Island is a real fan favorite and is on TV today.

In 1954, US Marshals Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) end up on the small island of Shutter Island. Ashcliffe Hospital is located here mentally disturbed criminals. Although it is considered escape-proof, patient Rachel Solando managed to escape her locked cell without a trace.
Teddy and Chuck soon discover even more dark secrets. Next to medical experiments on humans and traumatized inmates, there seems to be another patient whom the prison director, Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley) tried to keep it a secret.

Martin Scorsese regrets Shutter Island
Thriller fans can’t avoid Shutter Island. For us it came in at number 14 of the 20 best mystery thrillers 4th place among the best Leonardo DiCaprio films. Despite all the praise, successful director Scorsese is not particularly proud of his work, as he told GQ in an interview:
[Einen Oscar für Departed zu gewinnen], encouraged me to make another film with Shutter Island. Turns out I probably did would have moved on and Silence should have done.
After Shutter Island, Scorsese distanced himself from studio films and made his work with independent financing. But the Scorsese/DiCaprio dream team still has it further projects in planning. After the film adaptation of David Grann’s novel of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon, another adaptation by the author is planned: the survival drama The Wager. According to rumors, the director is also supposed to be a Frank Sinatra biopic plan – with DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles.
